Tile Destruction Training

Please see photo collage featuring two of our Albany 1st Kup students (Adrielle and Ella) practising tile breaks recently; in preparation for their future Black Belt Grading Exam. As their technique, strength and timing develops further, more tiles will be added to the stack. Tile breaks (destruction) are not only a tactile analysis of correct technique, strength and focus, but most importantly; a test of self-confidence and mental fortitude. These are the attributes that must be honed and polished over time in preparation for a student’s application for a First Martial Arts (WA) Black Belt.Due to the increased level of potential risk associated with tiles (as opposed to boards) we stress that members are only to attempt tiles at the Dojang, under strict instructions by their Branch Instructor. Please do not attempt to break tiles at home.

Kicking drills outdoors

This photo, taken recently at our Beechboro Dojang, highlights our commitment to students being well-versed in training on various surfaces, such as; grass, sand and paved areas – not just on the hard polished floors commonly found in the Dojang. This is due to the fact that a Self Defence situation may occur anywhere, at any time, and on any surface.

Skipping Warm Ups

It is essential that at the commencement of every FIRST Martial Arts WA class that we allocate 15 to 20 dynamic minutes to cardio, flexibility, strength and balance drills. At First Martial Arts, we try to keep our warm-ups fresh; sometimes introducing different equipment to keep our students challenged – in this case skipping ropes!

A well-worn Brown Belt 👊

This signifies that our students value our traditional martial art and respect the concept of time-honoured promotions – there are no quick promotions here (3 months/ 6 months+ are the bare minimum). All First Martial Arts WA students are required to meet minimum time served on each rank, in addition to strong technique, sound mental strength and a firm understanding of the syllabus. This provides them with adequate time on each rank to gain a deeper knowledge of the Art.

Next Generation of FMA Leaders

Image of our youngest WA Junior Black Belt, Ivana, assisting one our young 10th Kup students with her uniform before the commencement of the White Belt Exam 11/09/2022. In our traditional school, with rank (no matter what age) comes responsibility and duty; so our next generation of First Martial Arts (WA) leaders are formed over the decades.
